Saturday athletics

I remember
Sweaty odour
Stinking the stadium.
Long dry grass
danced in the wind
A slight quiver crawled up my spine

I was so nervous I was wobbling
like a leaf
in the wind,
my breathing heavy.

I heard the gun boom
like a bomb
my mind blank.
I heard cheers
calling my name.
I heard my heartbeat
like the steps in a scary house.

I see two girls in front.
I charge like a bull
The finish line is in arm’s reach.
Thank goodness it's over.

Yelps of happiness
burst out of me.
I was overwhelmed

My family was so happy
their screams
popped  my ear drums.

I won the race.
